报告题目:Investigation of Photocatalytic Reaction Mechanisms by In Situ Infrared Spectroscopy

报告摘要:This presentation will discuss the use of in situ infrared techniques to study the mechanisms of photocatalytic and photoelectrochemcial (PEC) oxidation.  We have focused our efforts on investigation of photocatalytic/photoelectrochemical oxidation of ethanol, methylene blue, cellulose, and lignin.  In situ infrared study revealed that these organic molecules served as electron donors; the aldehyde and carboxylate species were identified as reaction intermediates.  UV and/or visible light radiation on adsorbed organic molecules on TiO2 resulted in accumulation of photo-generated electrons, increasing the electronic conductivity of TiO2.  PEC studies revealed H2 and CO2 were the major products from ethanol and cellulose.  The advantages and limitations of in situ infrared techniques as well as the use of mechanistic information to design photocatalysts and photoelectro-catalysts will be discussed.

 

报告人简介:Dr. Steven S. C. Chuang is Professor of Polymer Science and the Director of the FirstEnergy Advanced Energy Research Center at the University of Akron.  This center was established in 2009 with the financial support from FirstEnergy Corp.  This center is committed to basic research that is needed to develop large scale carbon capture processes and coal-based fuel cells.  His research programs focus on (i) developing a fundamental understanding of the reactivity of adsorbed species and its associated sites and (ii) scaling up of catalytic and adsorption processes form the laboratory scale to the pilot scale.   Professor Chuang received his Diploma from National Taipei Inst. of Tech in 1977, MS from New Jersey Inst. of Tech in 1982, and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985.  He served as Chair of Chemical Engineering in 1997-2005 at Akron and moved to Polymer Science in 2011.
