Defective Graphenes as Photocatalysts for Solar Fuel Production

报告摘要:

Graphenes, when obtained from biomass wastes, are sustainable and affordable materials that are going to play a key role in production and storage of renewable energy. A few years ago we reported that pyrolysis of natural polysaccharides, followed by exfoliation gives in high yields defective graphenes. Depending on the composition of the precursors some dopant elements can be introduced. The procedure is useful for the preparation of films and suspensions of single and few-layers graphenes. A variation of this pyrolytic method can also be useful for the preparation of heterojunctions between defective graphene and other 2D materials or metal nanoplatelets that exhibit high photocatalytic activity for H2 generation, overall water splitting and CO2 reduction. Due to their electrical conductivity make also these materials adequate as photoelectrocatalysts.

Hermenegildo García was made a full Professor at the Technical University of Valencia in 1996 and is a staff member of the Instituto de Tecnología Química, a joint center of the Technical University of Valencia and the Spanish National Research Council. He made postdoctoral stays in the group of Professor J. C. Scaiano at the University of Ottawa. Prof. Garcia has been active in the field of heterogeneous catalysis working with graphene, porous catalysts and nanoparticles, has published over 650 papers and has filed over 25 patents, two of them in industrial exploitation. Prof. Garcia is Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Bucharest, the recipient of the 2016 Rey Jaime I award in New Technologies, 2011 Janssen-Cilag award given by the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry and the 2008 Alpha Gold of the Spanish Society of Glass and Ceramics. He is Honorary Professor at the King Abdullah University since 2011. He was Hsun Lee award for excellence in materials research from the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Science at Shenyang. He is among the most-cited scientist according to the Thomson Reuters and Shanghai University since 2011. His H factor is 86 according to the web of Science. He has supervised 41 PhD thesis, eight of his former co-workers are full Professor in European Universities.
