报告摘要:

Iron and its oxides are not only greener than many of precious known metals but can perform numerous catalytical reactions of industrial and environmental interests such as pigments, magnetic recording media, catalysis, and magnetic fluids. Iron oxides have shown potential in energy storage, green synthesis, and water purification. Current interest in iron oxides is on high-valent iron species (FeVI, FeV, and FeIV), which have shown their involvement in numerous biological and environmental reactions.  In the past decade, there is an increasing interest in tetraoxy high-valent iron anions, commonly called ferrates (e.g. ferrate(VI), FeVIO42- and ferrate(V), FeVO43-) in aqueous solutions due to their importance in high energy density rechargeable batteries, in cleaner (“greener”) technology for organic syntheses, in environmentally friendly water and wastewater treatment processes.  The presentation will give applications of ferrates in the development of alternative energy for fuel, industrial synthesis, and oxidants/disinfectants to purify waters from toxins and micropollutants to meet major challenges of environmental sustainability.

Virender K. Sharma 毕业于迈阿密大学罗森斯蒂尔学院海洋和大气科学系,获博士学位,之后在布鲁克海文国家实验室和纽约州立大学(纽约)进行博士后研究。现为德州农工大学公共卫生学院(SPH)环境与职业健康系教授。Sharma博士在高铁酸盐化学及环境应用领域和自然纳米粒子在水生环境中的命运和毒性及对人类和生态健康所造成的影响方面作出了重要贡献。Sharma博士累计发表学术论文250篇,引用次数超过1200次的文章达52篇,参与出版专著52本,发表会议论文36篇,撰写和编辑专著7部。被美国化学学会评选为杰出化学家,其高铁酸盐和纳米粒子的研究获得了美国化学学会环境化学分会授予的优异奖,并被环境科学与技术期刊(EST)授予优秀评审奖。
